An appearance requirement should say which face is visible, how it will be viewed and what reference defines acceptance. Terms such as “premium carbon finish” are subjective. A practical finish specification combines a face map, a reference sample and agreed criteria for the areas a customer will actually see.

Mark the cosmetic zones
Use the drawing to distinguish exposed faces, hidden faces, edges and areas later covered by hardware. Identify the expected weave direction where appearance matters. If several adjacent panels form a visible set, discuss their relationship together; approving each panel in isolation may not resolve the appearance of the assembled group.
Use a controlled reference
A photograph is useful for communicating intent, but lighting and screens change the apparent colour and gloss. Where finish is important, agree a physical sample or another controlled reference and record its identifier. Define viewing conditions and any permitted variation in a way both parties can reproduce.
Keep appearance separate from performance
A smooth surface does not prove laminate strength, and a visible weave is not a complete material specification. Keep cosmetic acceptance and engineering acceptance as separate lines in the documentation. This makes it easier to investigate a concern without treating every visual difference as either harmless or automatically structural.

Frequently asked questions
Can a website picture be the finish standard?
It can communicate a direction. For repeatable acceptance, agree a controlled reference rather than relying only on a compressed screen image.
Must both faces have the same finish?
Only if the project requires it. Specify each face independently and confirm the resulting manufacturing scope.
