Custom Carbon Fiber Blank Plate — main product reference (concept illustration)

Carbon Fiber Plate RFQ: The Dimensions That Actually Matter

Plates & Panels / Purchasing guide

At a glance

A useful carbon fiber plate enquiry identifies the finished outline, thickness, critical features and inspection conditions. A single length-by-width number describes a rectangle, but it does not tell a manufacturer how the part fits an assembly. Separate blank-material requirements from the requirements of the finished machined component before comparing quotations.

Concept illustration; dimensions and configuration are defined by the project drawing.

Start with the finished part

State whether you want a rectangular blank or a ready-to-install part. For a finished panel, include the outline drawing, hole coordinates, slots, edge details and drawing revision. Mark which face is visible in the assembly. If the plate is only an intermediate blank, specify the allowance you intend to remove rather than asking the supplier to guess your later machining process.

Give critical dimensions a reference

A hole location is meaningful only in relation to a datum or reference edge. Identify the dimensions that control assembly fit and explain how they will be checked. Avoid applying the same tight tolerance to every feature by habit. Ask the supplier to confirm feasibility and the measurement approach before the order is released.

Make the quotation comparable

Send the same drawing revision and quantity to every supplier. Request separate confirmation of material definition, machining, finish and inspection deliverables. A lower price is not a useful comparison when one quotation covers a blank sheet and another includes a fully machined panel. Keep supplier exceptions attached to the quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sketch enough to start?

A dimensioned sketch can support an initial discussion. Resolve missing geometry and acceptance requirements before treating the quotation as production-ready.

Should I provide a CAD file and a drawing?

Provide both when available, and identify which document governs if they disagree. The supplier should not have to choose silently.
