Ordering Cut-to-Length Carbon Fiber Tubes: End Conditions Matter

Tubes & Interfaces / Purchasing guide

At a glance

A cut-to-length order should define the finished length and the condition of both ends. Two tubes with the same overall length may behave differently in an assembly if their end details differ. Describe the intended interface, any subsequent machining and the inspection setup before treating a cutting operation as a finished-part specification.

Give each end an identity

Use end A and end B or another unambiguous drawing convention when the ends differ. Show holes, slots, inserts and any required orientation between them. For a tube with clocked features, a length dimension alone cannot tell the supplier how one end is positioned relative to the other.

Specify the supplied condition

Clarify whether the supplied part is a rough cut blank or a finished component. Identify any allowance reserved for later operations. If end squareness or another geometric relationship matters, put the requirement and reference surface on the drawing and agree how it will be checked.

Avoid hidden work in the quotation

Ask the supplier to list included cutting, machining, edge finishing, cleaning and packing operations. Provide the quantity and any grouping requirements. For matched tube sets, explain whether lengths are individually inspected or need to be compared within a set; those are different acceptance questions.

Frequently asked questions

Can both ends be assumed identical?

Only when the drawing defines them that way. Label different ends clearly.

Should cut allowance be included in the finished length?

State it separately when you need an oversized blank. Otherwise the supplier may reasonably interpret the dimension as the final supplied length.
